Thomas Chi, MD, MBA
We are proud to announce that Dr. Thomas Chi has been awarded the 2023 Arthur Smith Award. This award is presented to a urologist who has already achieved distinction through myriad contributions to the field of Endourology in research and teaching within 10 years of completing residency or fellowship. Dr. Chi is a previous American Urological Association (AUA) Gold cystoscope winner.
“His creativity in using ultrasound to remove kidney stones led him to build the first x-ray-free kidney stone treatment center in the United States,” said Dr. Ben Breyer, Chair and Taube Family Distinguished Professor in Urology. “Dr. Chi also established a laser surgery program at UCSF where patients undergo holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. His clinical programs facilitate safer surgery for patients with faster recovery and improved clinical outcomes.”
Dr. Chi’s leads a research team focused on innovative approaches to establishing clinical trials and developing new treatments for kidney stones and BPH. He has been funded by the National Institute of Health and the AUA Urology Care Foundation.
Dr. Chi is an active leader at the national and international stage, currently serving as a member of the AUA Science and Quality Council where he drives improved quality standards for patients. As Chair of the Fellowship Committee for the Endourological Society he took his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion beyond UCSF to an international platform. In this role, he spearheaded obtaining grant funding to support developing a more diverse trainee pipeline globally.
