Endourology, Laparoscopy & Urinary Stone Disease

Over the past twenty years, the paradigm of surgical management has evolved greatly. This is especially true in urology and currently many disease processes can be managed in a minimally invasive fashion. The section of endourology and laparoscopy treats a wide variety of urologic issues involving the adrenal gland, kidney, ureter, bladder, and prostate, using the latest technology in order to minimize patient morbidity and improve recovery.

Urinary stone disease affects a large number of people both in the United States and throughout the world. Stones can be caused by a range of medical and anatomic problems and often requires surgical intervention for management. Treatment of stones within the urinary tract using small telescopes (endoscopes) and instruments comprises a large portion of the endourology practice, where problems are addressed from within the body. We successfully treat stones located within the kidney, ureter, and bladder using endourologic techniques. In addition, other problems of the urinary tract, such as blockages, can be cured in this fashion. These experiences help us pioneer and apply our familiarity with minimally invasive concepts to laparoscopy, allowing us to replicate traditional open surgeries (e.g., removal of tumors, reconstruction). Currently many urologic diseases are best treated using laparoscopy, and we are actively developing new ways to effectively and safely perform novel procedures so that all patients can benefit from endourologic/laparoscopic methods.
